Strasbourg progresses in the 2026 GDS-Index: an increasingly committed MICE destination for sustainable tourism
Strasbourg is continuing to make strong progress in sustainable tourism. With a score of 74.59% in the 2026 GDS-Index, the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg are continuing their upward trajectory and now rank 35th worldwide among the destinations assessed. This progress reflects the collective commitment of the local area and further strengthens Strasbourg’s appeal as a responsible destination for business events.
Strasbourg gains 10 points in four years
The Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) has just published its 2026 ranking of destinations committed to sustainable tourism.
This year, Strasbourg achieved a score of 74.59%, compared with 71.79% in 2025.
This progress reflects a long-term trend: over the past four years, the destination has gained 10 points in the GDS-Index.
At international level, Strasbourg has therefore moved from 37th place in 2025 to 35th place in 2026.
Beyond the ranking itself, these results primarily demonstrate a collective momentum driven by the City and Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, tourism stakeholders and the many partners committed to the sustainable transformation of the destination.
Concrete progress in sustainable tourism
This positive development is based on several advances across the destination.
The metropolitan area’s decarbonisation strategy is continuing, with a particular focus on better measuring and reducing the environmental impact of activities.
An increasing number of tourism providers in Strasbourg are committing to responsible practices, directly contributing to the transformation of the local tourism ecosystem.
An approach that meets the new expectations of business tourism
For business event organisers, sustainability is playing an increasingly important role when choosing a destination.
Organising a congress, convention, seminar or corporate event now requires consideration of a wide range of criteria: accessibility, mobility, accommodation, catering, carbon footprint reduction, suppliers’ commitments, as well as social and local impact.
Against this backdrop, Strasbourg’s progress in the GDS-Index is a strong indicator of the destination’s collective commitment.
A committed MICE destination
For business tourism, a commitment to sustainability is not limited to a few isolated initiatives. It depends on the ability of all stakeholders within a destination to collectively evolve their practices.
In Strasbourg, this momentum involves accommodation providers, event venues, service providers, mobility stakeholders and tourism professionals.
This collective commitment enables event organisers to develop business events that align with their own CSR objectives, while offering participants an experience that is both responsible, accessible and inspiring.
What is the GDS-Index?
The GDS-Index is an international benchmark developed by the Global Destination Sustainability Movement. Based on voluntary participation, it assesses destinations’ sustainability performance using more than 70 criteria.
The assessment covers environmental and social aspects, as well as destination management and the commitment of tourism providers.
For Strasbourg, this assessment provides a tool to measure progress and identify areas for action in order to continue the sustainable transformation of the destination.
